Production

We mine and work slate at Bad Fredeburg, in the Rhineland Slate Range, and also import high-quality surface quarried slate from Spanish quarries.

Highly efficient powered saws and splitting equipment dominate mining of domestic Fredeburg slate at depths of 80 to 120 m, with careful orientation around environmental considerations. Non-rail-based operation has become firmly established for production and roadway heading. Magog's slate mines at Fredeburg have been able to advance with a large range of in-house developments thanks to large-scale exploration and exploitation of the joint mines and the successful introduction of high-technology mechanization methods.

Above ground, too, continuous developments and investment in new technologies have proven worthwhile. Cutting and dressing machines designed within the company have become indispensable aids in competitive slate processing. The slate mined is firstly cut into raw blocks on modern sawing systems. The slate is then manually split to a thickness of around 5 mm using modern pneumatic picks. Dressers then give the raw slate its desired form.
